Many people feel the need for a snack after a workout. Wendy Bazilian, DrPH, RD, and a contributor to the book Eat Clean, Stay Lean, states that this is more a post-workout desire than a post-workout need. Bazilian states that post-workout snacks can actually undo the effort it took to burn calories during the workout. In addition, there are also workout snacks that cause weight gain.
Having water before and during your workout is probably sufficient, although intense workouts might merit a snack afterward. If you do have a true need for a snack you’ll want to choose one that does not unravel your hard work.
Avoiding Workout Snacks That Cause Weight Gain
A smoothie can be a well-earned post-workout treat or one of the workout snacks that cause weight gain. It all depends on your choice of smoothie. Some smoothies can be high in calories and not have the right carb-to-protein ratio for post-exercise. They also may have as much as 469 calories and 100 g of sugar! A proper and healthy smoothie should have 15-20 grams of protein, and the rest should be carbs.
Fruit-flavored Greek yogurt is another popular post-workout choice. While Greek yogurt is high in protein, some have as much as 5 teaspoons of added sugars! Plain yogurt topped with fruit is a more healthy choice.
A well-made peanut butter and jelly sandwich on 100% whole grain bread with natural nut butter and fruit spread with no added sugars is a good post-workout reboot. A poorly made PB&J made on refined white bread with sugar-laden jelly and sugary peanut butter is essentially an oversized donut and definitely one of the workout snacks that cause weight gain!
Another of the workout snacks that cause weight gain is yogurt-covered raisins. The yogurt in these snacks is mostly a sweet coating made of sugar and processed oils — making it one of those unhealthy foods disguised as healthy food. A handful of dried fruit and nuts is the better choice.
Energy bars are another post-workout snack that require good judgment when choosing. Many are candy-coated chemical pools that are too high in calories, too low in protein and do not have the the proper ratio of protein to carbs. Check for one that has around 200 calories or less, under 10 grams of sugar and a good amount of protein.
