If you have been following my story, you know that I had my facelift after completing my body lift. Affording post bariatric plastic surgery costs are a matter of personal finances and priorities. Some patience may be needed to in order to reach the goal. I waited ten years after my gastric bypass to address my post bariatric plastic surgery costs (and fears).
Looking back, the wait was worth it. In erasing the last traces of my former obesity, I was transformed emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Mind, body, and spirit are connected, after all.
Who Gets Plastic Surgery?
Plastic surgery is not reserved for celebrities and rich housewives. The people I know who have had plastic surgery after weight loss are professionals like me. Others are students, laborers, housewives, and retirees. We are ordinary people.
The February 2014 edition of Aesthetic Surgery Journal featured a survey of patients who defeated the obesity epidemic having achieved significant weight loss. The survey asked which patients were most likely to have plastic surgery to correct excess skin and in which areas they sought improvement.
The areas that people most wanted improvement in were:
- 62.2%. Abdomen
- 37.6% Upper Arms
- 35.6% Rear or Buttocks
- 28.3% Breast or Chest
Additionally, the survey found:
- Patients with a weight loss of more than 50kg (110lb) showed a stronger desire for post bariatric plastic surgery than those with less than 20 kg (44 lb).
- Women were more likely to desire post bariatric body contouring than men.
- Younger age groups had a stronger desire for post bariatric body contouring.
- The majority of patients wanted to have post bariatric plastic surgery for both functional reasons and improved body confidence.

Affording Post-Bariatric Plastic Surgery
Often plastic surgeons will offer discounts for repeat customers. Another way to make post bariatric plastic surgery costs more affordable is to combine procedures. For example, my first plastic surgery was a single procedure, a tummy tuck, in one 2-hr surgery that cost $7000. My second plastic surgery was four combined procedures in one 6-hr surgery: convert the tummy tuck to a lower body lift, and inner thigh lift, extended arm lift, and breast lift. This combined post bariatric plastic surgery cost $18000.
