If you have had a child, used birth control pills, or are nearing mid-life, then the problem may be hormonal. All of these factors can lead to Estrogen Dominance, a condition where progesterone levels are too low to balance out estrogen.
More Reasons for Estrogen Dominance
There are more reasons for estrogen dominance. Ovarian cysts or tumors can cause excess estrogen production. Stress can do the same.
All body fat has an enzyme that turns adrenal steroids to estrogen. More fat translates into more estrogen.
The liver removes estrogen. A decreased enzyme activity or liver diseases like cirrhosis can lead to an increase in estrogen levels.
Estrogen supplementation and exposure to pesticides used on food also cause Estrogen Dominance.
However, the most common cause for estrogen dominance is obesity. Read: Testosterone Can Help Women Lose Weight.
Adequate balance between estrogen and progesterone is important because it decreases the risk for breast cancer and improves PMS.
Estrogen Dominance and the Struggle to Lose Weight
Too much estrogen turns more calories into fat. Fat cells make more estrogen, and estrogen causes more growth of fatty tissue. This excess fat usually builds up around the abdomen. Read: Belly Fat More Dangerous Than Obesity
Estrogen dominance can also cause a release of excess insulin. Too much insulin can lead to sugar cravings.
Estrogen excites the brain, causing estrogen dominant women to sleep restlessly. Lack of sleep disrupts Leptin, the hormone that regulates appetite. Lack of sleep also increase calorie intake and reduce energy expenditure. Read: Sleep Loss Causes Weight Gain
An improper balance between estrogen and progesterone causes women to retain more fluid than normal. The result is swelling and bloating.
The Progesterone Solution
Estrogen dominance is a hormonal imbalance that can be corrected by using bio-identical hormones. Lab testing will show the levels and balance of estrogen in the body. Although not as accurate as urine testing, saliva testing is easier. Once this is done, a treatment plan can be developed to restore hormonal balance.
In order to replicate an accurate hormonal environment, it is necessary to get the hormones directly into the blood. A cream or gel rubbed once or twice daily into mucus membranes is effective, but progesterone cream that is applied to the skin will eventually saturate fat tissues and stop working. To avoid this, apply it to the mucus membranes that line the labia and vagina. Absorption will be more efficient than through the skin.
Once hormonal balance is restored, benefits can include improved sleep, improved mood, increased energy, improved mental function, and improved libido.
