Home is our sanctuary. Or it should be. In the past I used to get home from the office and de-stress with food. Some folks replace stress eating with alcohol after bariatric surgery. But I love to come home now and know that I will relax and unwind naturally, without turning to food or alcohol.
Is your habit to hit the bar or fast food drive-thru after work? Then here are ways to de-stress without food or alcohol. When we’ve had a stressful day, it’s good to be able to shake it all off, refresh, and remember that life is good after all.
De-Stress without Food or Alcohol
Resist the urge to keep working
When your workload is huge, it can feel never-ending. And it’s difficult to resist the temptation to take your work home. But not doing so can lead to some very bad habits. Here are a few tips to help leave work at work and keep your personal time your own. Set firm rules with yourself and follow them.
Life is short so don’t miss out. No one ever sat on their death bed and said “My only regret is that I didn’t work more.”
Workout or walk
Exercise is an incredible stress reliever! While it might seem like the last thing you want to do, getting active could be the best thing to help you shake off a bad day.
Some of the best workouts for stress relief are yoga, running, or a high-intensity program. Burning off excess energy helps us feel more in control. And diverting our focus will take our minds off the office.
Even a walk before or after dinner burns off our aggression and brings peace.
Get an early night
Feeling tired and stressed is not a good mix. Fatigue heightens feelings of stress, anxiety and other mental health conditions. And when we’re not at our best we are even less able to manage stress when things go wrong. So an early night to bed works wonders for stress levels.
Here’s what I do: Eat something nurturing for dinner. Take a soothing bath along with a cup of herbal tea and a melatonin supplement. Then I get into bed earlier than I normally would. Find it difficult to get to sleep? Try some simple ways of falling asleep fast to help you out.
Try natural stress-relievers
There are plenty of natural stress-relievers we can try, too. Getting out in nature, aromatherapy, mediation, are wonderful ways to de-stress without food. There are calming supplements that may help, so may a cup of chamomile tea. Or look into Savage CBD oil and its different stress-relieving properties to see if that might be an option.
Create a sanctuary
We all get stressed at work from time to time. Coming home after a long and trying day should provide us with instant relief. And the way we style our homes can make the vital difference. It should make us feel much more relaxed in our own surroundings.
One doesn’t need to remodel an entire home. Just can create a sacred space in one room. Or add cozy and nourishing elements throughout your space. There are many ideas for making your home cozier and perfectly designed for relaxation. And I have oodles of Pinterest boards on decorating and landscaping, too.
Tryout different methods to de-stress without food or alcohol. As this will help you find what works best for you when you’ve had a tough day. And if you really need to get something off your chest then talk to someone about it. You can hit an AA Meeting or an OA Meeting and get a sponsor.
